Earlier today, due to overwhelming demand — and the fact that things are kind of slow this week — I published my picks for The Best Songs Of 2011 (So Far), the 20 tracks that have shaped the first half of the year.
In a shocking twist (especially to anyone who read my mid-term round-up of the year's best albums), both Britney Spears and Beyonce made the cut ... along with the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Adele and Kreayshawn, though that hasn't stopped our readers from picking apart my selections, something that has become as much of an annual tradition as my lists at this point.
Seems that Britney should have been higher on my list (her "Till The World Ends" came in at #3), or that Lady Gaga's "Heavy Metal Lover" (my #2 pick) should've been replaced by "Scheiße." Still others complained that I didn't include a song from Eminem and Royce Da 5'9"'s Bad Meets Evil project — "Take From Me" and "Lighters" are popular suggestions — or that Beyonce's "Run The World (Girls)" really deserved better than #10.
Simply put, the reaction has been so great already that, much like we did for my Best Albums piece, we've decided to let you determine the Best Song from the first half of 2011 ... with another Newsroom poll.
So if you're bummed that Britney wasn't #1, or that Bad Meets Evil didn't make the cut (or any other sundry of complaints,) well, now's your time to shine. We've taken the most popular tunes and pitted them against each other, to determine who truly reigns supreme. Cast your vote for your favorite song below!

Femme Fatale wins album of the year on MTV poll!!!!!
Femme Fatale is Album Of The Year so far after fans voted in a recent MTV.com poll!
When we say things were close, we mean it: As of yesterday afternoon, when we last checked in on the polls, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way was leading with a slim 2 percent lead over Brit Brit. But Miss Spears’ fans came to their diva’s rescue and she persevered in the home stretch, pulling ahead of Lady G by a full 5 percent.
Gaga and Britney left everyone else in the dust. The two accounted for over 85 percent of the total vote, leaving Beyonce’s latest, 4 (which, in fairness, we should note was only released this week), to grab just under 10 percent of the remaining votes. Adele, Bad Meets Evil and Chris Brown split what was left pretty evenly, with each album pulling in less than 2 percent of the vote.
Out of the 31,000+ votes, here are the results:
Britney Spears, Femme Fatale – 14,094 votes – 45.17%
Lady Gaga, Born This Way – 12,514 – 40.11%
Beyonce, 4 – 3,095 – 9.92%
Adele, 21 – 557 – 1.79%
Bad Meets Evil, Hell: The Sequel – 557 – 1.79%
Chris Brown, F.A.M.E. – 384 – 1.23%
Vote Britney Queen Of Pop
Rolling Stone magazine this week declared that Lady GaGa is the Queen of Pop, but do you agree? They were pretty strict in their criteria - a solo album in the last three years was a must - and used a sort-of-scientific ranking method to come to their conclusion.
Here at Digital Spy, we're much more in favour of the brutal simplicity of mob rule democracy. So, we've created our very own 11-name shortlist and invite you to vote in our exclusive poll. You can also tell us just why you've made your choice in the comments box below.
PS: BRITNEY WIN WITH 41,6%
LADY GAGA 30,7%
CHRISTINA AGUILERA 7,2%
MADONNA 5,4%
BEYONCE 4,2%
RIHANNA 3,1%
Britney Spears | 41.6% |
