VOTE: Best ´90s video

You came in droves last week to vote in our poll for the best '80s video. And now it's time for the '90s...

With the launch of MTV on Aug. 1, 1981, video took on a new role in the music world -- and as the first song played on the cable network (The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star") declared, video did, indeed, kill the radio star.
These days, music videos are standard practice for artists both big and small, and needless to say, the scale of and technology behind these clips has escalated over the years. And far from being the latest new thing, by the '90s the music video was a firmly entrenched part of the music world. From grunge to gangsta rap to bubblegum pop, some of the most unforgettable videos ever made came from the format's second decade. Who could forget a teenage Britney Spears dancing in her schoolgirl miniskirt in the "Baby One More Time" clip or Nirvana's Kurt Cobain rocking out amongst the anarchy cheerleaders in a creepy pep rally?
Now, as we celebrate 30 years of music video television, we invite you to revisit -- and vote on -- each decade's best. Billboard.com editors filled out our poll with a handful of our favorites from the 1990s, but use the write-in option below to vote from other clips released from Jan. 1, 1990 to Dec. 31, 1999. The poll will remain open all week, and be sure to come back next week to vote in our '00s music video poll. We'll reveal readers' top picks for each decade after three weeks of polls.

Rolling Stones review Femme Fatale

★★★★/5

Britney Spears is pop music’s stealth avant-gardist. For years, critics have dismissed her as a cipher with a wisp of a voice. But from the minute she burst on the scene — heralded by the keyboard power chords of “. . . Baby One More Time” — her music has steered bubblegum into weirder, woollier territory. “Toxic” was a mélange of Bollywood and spy-movie guitar; “Piece of Me” was an essay on 21st-century tabloid infamy crooned over 22nd-century club rhythms. Then there’s this year’s “Hold It Against Me,” which dissolves into a furious dubstep breakdown — easily the most assaultive beat on the Hot 100 right now.
Femme Fatale may be Britney’s best album; certainly it’s her strangest. Conceptually it’s straightforward: a party record packed with sex and sadness. Max Martin and Dr. Luke, the world’s two biggest hitmakers, are responsible for seven of 12 songs: big melodies and bigger Eurodisco thumps. But other producers go nuts, tossing the kitchen sink at Britney. The Bloodshy-helmed “How I Roll” is sputtering, oddly beautiful techno. In “Big Fat Bass,” Will.i.am turns Britney into a cyborg obsessed with low-end. (“The bass is getting bigger!” she exults.) On nearly every track, Britney’s voice is twisted, shredded, processed, roboticized. Maybe this is because she doesn’t have much of a voice; it’s certainly because she, more than almost any other pop diva, is simply game. Femme fatale? Not so much. But say this for Britney: She’s an adventuress.

BREAKING NEWS: New britney spears album coming to you early 2011?! Rumors are swirling!!

Album's co-executive producer Dr. Luke expects new album out by early 2011.
While "Glee" was spot-on in its tribute to Britney Spears in September, it's safe to say her fans are ready for the real deal. The pop princess, who has remained relatively low-key since wrapping up her Circus Tour, is currently working on her new album with a few familiar faces, including producers Dr. Luke and Max Martin.

"She's such an icon, I don't want to let anyone down," Dr. Luke said last week at the Hollywood Reporter/ Billboard Film & TV Music Conference. "But most importantly, I want to make good music."
Luke said that he is anticipating that Britney's album will see an early 2011 release, and a source told THR it would hit stores before March 31.
In addition to Dr. Luke ("Circus") and Martin ("... Baby One More Time"), Darkchild and newcomer Billboard are also said to be working with Spears.
When asked if there were anything else he could reveal about the heavily guarded project, Luke wouldn't say much. "Just that I'm excited to be co-executive producing with Max Martin, the person who kind of invented Britney, and to make good music," he said. "And she's such an amazing vehicle to getting that music out to a lot of people in every country."
With Luke and Martin helming the project, fans may expect to hear Spears sounding like the producers' frequent collaborators Katy Perry and Ke$ha. But there have also been indications that Brit will take a fresher approach. Last month, Spears' manager Adam Leber spoke to Entertainment Weekly about her next album, promising that it will introduce a "progressive" sound from the pop star.
''It'll be a departure from what you've heard,'' he added.

The Details About The Britney Episode Of Glee

Britney Spears has always had her share of doubters, but in an upcoming episode that plays homage to the singer, the students of William McKinley High will have her back as they fight for the pop princess, according to castmember Heather Morris.

In an interview with Australian magazine TV Week, the actress dished about the plotline surrounding next week’s “Britney/Brittany” episode and what it was like working with the pop icon.
“Through a special substance, I go under and have a couple of dream sequences — not only myself, but with Santana [Naya Rivera],” Morris explained. “A lot of it has to do with Will [Matthew Morrison] not allowing us to perform Britney Spears songs, because he doesn’t agree with what kind of entertainer she is, so it’s our fight to do Britney. But it’s not just us doing Britney in show choir; there are other sequences — it’s our homage to her.”
In the episode, which airs next Tuesday, viewers might catch a rendition of Spears’ 2003 hit collabo with Madonna “Me Against the Music.” Last month, the singer tweeted on-set photos of her and Morris re-enacting a scene from the girl-on-girl clip. Aside from the Madonna collaboration, ” … Baby One More Time” and “Toxic” are also reported to be part of the episode.
Morris told TV Week she wasn’t nervous to work with the pop star since it wasn’t her first encounter with Spears. “It wasn’t really nerve-racking, because I’ve met her before and I wasn’t really overwhelmed by who she is,” she admitted. “But the idea of what she has given us for the show and, for me, getting to dance with her and play with her on set, I was just staring at her at one point and thinking, ‘This is just so frickin’ awesome.’ ”
While show creator Ryan Murphy has already revealed his admiration for the singer, Morris’ idolization might be a bit more personal. “She was my idol from, like, age 12 to 16,” she told the magazine. “I sang to her [songs] in my living room and danced to her — I learned all her moves. And I had my talent shows and I lip-synched to her. I just kept flashing back to growing up and being obsessed with her.”
The 23-year-old actress might not have been fazed by Spears’ presence, but that wasn’t the case for everyone on set. “It was literally like the president had come,” Murphy previously said. “We all had to wear wristbands. I couldn’t get into my own sets at one point, which I thought was hilarious.”
Mr. Schuester isn’t the only character worried that Spears’ music will wreak havoc on the halls of McKinley High. “Sue Sylvester is of the opinion that Britney Spears is basically the anti-Christ,” Jane Lynch told TV Week of her character. “How does she put it? ‘A pop-culture provocateur and responsible for every out-of-control impulse ever created.’ So she fears that if Britney Spears’ music is played, it will create a sex riot — and it does.”

Katy Perry : I was a fan of buying original discs, I bought one a week, I have so many CDs at home and all the incredible music, I'm a fan of The Beatles I have all their collection. And some albums I never stop listening are for example Let Go by Avril Lavigne and ...Baby One More Time by Britney which are brilliant albums like the dreams of teenagers, Britney with her schoolgirl skirt, that time was fascinating. Sometimes I had to see the video in secret because my parents seem it strange and too sexy.
